Arles - Saint Gilles

---------

Yes. This summer has been a great moment to leave the always chaotic Barcelona and take a breathe making what I like the most: drawing with light and shapes with such a marvellous "box" which never stops surprising me

After one day and a half between "blablacar" and hitch hiking I got Arles International Photography Festival which is celebrated each year at the same french village

This Festival has got a wide mix of styles (I'll only stand out the ones I liked and impressed me the most, the list is neverending and lucky me that I could see them all)

Landscapes maker as John Davies (Great Britain), from who we can see an analogue work call 'The manifest social consequences of deindustrialisation'

-----------------

I can't forget the sublime work shown by Arno Rafael Minkkinen (Finland). For 40 years, his naked body has shown another kind of beauty, mixed with landscapes, with great American scenery or the icy world of Finland as the epicentre.

Another very interesting work about portraits is the one made by Pieter Hugo (South Africa) called THERE'S A PLACE IN HELL FOR ME AND MY FRIENDS. Portraits of the author and his friends from South Africa. Using a digital process to bring out skin pigment, he shows the contradictions of racial differences based on colour.

An amazing work with philosophical connotations, both interesting and fun by the french genius Gilbert Garcin from who I show almost entirely the work he exhibited  because its quality.

The work of the winner of the 2012 photo folio review, Arles by the spanish photographer Cristina Middel called 'The Afronauts'. A very 'Fontcubertian style'

"In 1964, Zambia launched a space programme to become the first African country to put a man on the moon. The Afronauts is based on the documentation of an impossible dream"

To result  the work made by Jean-Louis Courtinat (The social Testimony) because it's the type of photography I like and the one I feel more commited with, social documentary.

"30 years of commitment to people on the edges of society, often in the worst possible positions to defend themselves"

------------

During this photographic trip we've seen contemporary photography although 'Retrospective' was in too, in this case we must name the master Sergio Larrain with the world's first, eagerly waited retrospective of work by this chilean artist. A sharp, unconventional eye and a approach that is social and poetic at the same time. Became famous in 1991 in Arles after the representation of his work on Valparaiso with Pablo Neruda

-------

I just leave a youtube video about a letter which Sergio Larraín wrote  his nephew Sebastián Donoso  after expressing Sergio Larraín his desire of becoming a photographer. Photography lovers will love even more Photography and the one whom still are not, will start loving it after listening to it:

-------

There are a lot of private exhibitions too which have nothing to do with the official Festival, where neighbour phographers take adventage of tourist whom go to the Festival to show their works, this is one of the most funny and original I saw:

-------

Obviously I had time to do some other things, for example a little trip I did with a donkey called Kapucine and his owner Nico plus his friends Antoine and Robert. Nico came from Grenoble (middle east of France) with Kapucine, without anything else but the minimum belongings for camping in the night, some clothes and a few more things. There was no space for phones and credit cards.

They stopped in Arles and there was were we met. He was heading to Montpellier. An at least 25 km route was in between which will take us to Saint-Gilles, they offered me to go with them through the Rench Region walking almost all the time near to the Rhon river.

------

We said goodbye to Nico and Kapucine, they headed to Montpellier and the 3 of us came back to Arles by hitch hiking. A couple who picked us up from outside Saint-Gilles, drove us and left us at the entrance of Arles by car, I said goodbye to Antoine and Robert, they took their motorbike and headed to Grenoble. I was a cuple of days more in Arles till I came back to Barcelona again, moving out from this paradisiac place in South of France after finding a car again with "blablacar"
